Abstract:
The reception of the dramatic work of Victor Hugo by the New Greek theatre of the middle of the 19th century had two different sides: On the one hand an ardent response by the public and the theatre companies and on the other hand reserves from the theatrical critics. These reserves correspond to a more general objection against Romanticism, which is characteristic for the Greek intelligentsia of the time and originates from specific peculiarities of Greece as a nation. These national priorities impose a generally conservative orientation, which on the aesthetic level leads to the choice of Classicism with all its elements that are opponent to Romanticism. For these reasons there is a certain perplexity to consider concerning the reception of this romantic, democratic and revolutionary, but also burning philhellenic writer.
