Abstract:
At a time when we live fragmented lives, increasingly alienated from one another, almost scared of each other, in a hightech environment that puts the Reality Principle constantly in question, theatre people turn all the more often to the dynamics of dramatic monologue to stage their autobiographical stories and cultivate a new kind of communication with their audience by exploring and exploiting the inherent dualities of their medium as well as the dualities of their status as both narrators and heroes of their stories. The aim of this paper is to show the various phases contemporary dramatic monologue has gone through, starting with the performing self of the avantgardists of the 60s and finishing with the narcissistic theatrics of the 1990s. In the course of my argument I will argue how monologue has turned out to be the most direct expression (and critique) of an age in love with itself and its simulacra.
