Abstract:
This article reproduces the main points of the introduction of an edition of the play, together with another translation of the same author, “Alexander the Great” by Racine in the same year (S. Vasiliou, G. Ioannidis, W. Puchner, Unpublished dramatic translations in the Greek Theatre before 1821. The comedy “The Scottish wife” of Voltaire and the tragedy “Alexander the Great” of Racine by Georgios Kawakos from Chios in the year 1806, Athens, Academy of Athens 2008). The translation was found in MS Gr. 1077 of the Rumanian Academy of Science and copied by Grigoris Ioannidis (G. Ioannidis, W. Puchner, “Results of a scientific project of Greek Theatre Studies in Rumanian Archives”, Parabasis 6 (2005) 95-105). Interestingly this is the first translation of a theatre play of Voltaire in Greek and the only translation of a comedy of the celebrated French dramatist of the 18th century.
