Abstract:
In this studythree theatre plays, written by Petros Metastasios, are presented for the first time, as they were translated in modern Greek by the Zante born Ioannis Kantounis, himself also a writer belonging to the literary circle which preceded Dionysios Solomos.Through these plays we are able trace the efforts to extoll the qualities of the popular oral idiom in written form, we sample the attitudes of its champions towards the issue of translation, and we record the spirit of enlightenment which permeated the Ionian islands in the last decades of the 18th century.
