The science of Harmonics from Antiquity to Byzance
Author:
Abstract:
The author explores the affinities between ancient Greek and Byzantine Harmonics revealed by the practice of antiphonic chanting. The two musical systems share many common features, and the evolutionary process form the former to the latter is evident. What differs is the worldview implied in each one of them: Ancient Greek music is an expression of cosmic harmony, where as the Byzantine one points toward the harmonious essence of God’s creation.
