Some approaches on the issue of the Slavophones of Macedonia

The author explores the issue of the Slavophone minority in Greek Macedonia tracing its origins in the 19th century national struggles of the Balkan people to free themselves from Ottoman rule, as well as the internal conflicts between them. After the Balkan wars, pro-Bulgarian nationalists and pro-Greek cultured elites struggled for influence among the Slavophones of Macedonia, and the sequels of this struggle are visible in today’ s expression of the so-called “Macedonian” issue revolving around identity politics and national/linguistic homogenization.
