Parallel Title:
The metaphysical foundations of morals and anthropology in neo-platonic Proclos
Abstract:
The paper focuses on the anthropological dualism advocated by Proclos, according to whom the moral value of the soul is by far superior to that of the body. Examining the philosophical writings of the eminent neo-platonic philosopher, especially his admirably structured commentary on the First Alcibiades of Plato, the authors explore his metaphysical views, showing through convincing analysis that, according to Proclos, philosophical morality is not self-determined, but relies heavily on metaphysical ontology. Thus, the philosopher rejects all materialistic and empirical theories, proposing instead a moral system based on immutable archetypes which guide the human being to salvation.
