Abstract:
The teacher Dimitrios Kalavakidis who came from Meleniko, worked in various schools at Meleniko, Alistrati, Serres, Stenimachos and the monastery of Ikosifinissa in the first half of the 19 th century. At the same time, he founded a short-lived printing office in his hometown, which published mainly schoolbooks, trained future teachers and soon became one of the most important book distributors in today’s Bulgarian area. He used to keep mail correspondence with eminent people of his time. A considerable part of that mail correspondence is now kept at the archives of the National Library of Bulgaria. In the present report, three letters out of that mail correspondence archives are presented, two of them addressed to the Elders of Stenimachos and one of them addressed to a teacher called Konstantinos Saitidis, one of Kalavakidis’s successors at the school of Stenimachos. Out of these letters obviously comes the anguish of the local people as well as of the people from the Greek communities to educate their children at first, their struggle to build schools and finally to hire eminent teachers, who would be able to respond well both to their learning and educational aims.
