Abstract:
The shadow theatre artist Giannis Roulias is very closely linked to the figure of Barbagiorgos and many believe that he is its creator. The study establishes the period during which Roulias is active in the field of shadow theatre and links the opinions of various researchers, the newspaper articles of that period and oral tradition. Furthermore, it attempts to set the facts into their correct temporal limits and to confirm or reject certain theories. In some cases new theories are proposed, in accordance with the elements presented. Roulias’s attempt to impose the figure of Barbagiorgos as the leading figure in Greek shadow theatre is analysed and answers are given to the fundamental questions referring to the relationship of Roulias and Barbagiorgos as well as the origin of the figure in question.
