Abstract:
George Theotokas (1905-1966), novelist, essayist, poet and playwright showed a great interest in theatre. He was a director of the National Theatre of Greece in Athens during crucial social and political times (1945-1946,1950-1952,1963-1964). He was one of the founders of the National Theatre of Northern Greece in Thessaloniki and its first president. He introduced a number of innovations in these two state institutions like establishing poetry afternoon performances, modern artistic forms and alternate repertoire and by cooperating with significant people such as S. Karantinos, P. Katselis, N.Xatzikiriakos-Gikas. He believed in the spiritual and social role of the theatre and he envisaged the reciprocal influence of Greek culture to the European one.
