Author:
Abstract:
The evolution of drama production in 20th century Greece reflects the social and political conflicts that characterized Modern Greek history, whilst at the same time Greek drama attempts to determine its own identity through various styles and techniques. The author traces this movement toward more liberated and sophisticated dramatic forms, referring to the works of the playwrights who contributed to the renovation of Modem Greek theatre. Gregorios Xenopoulos at the turn of the century and Iakovos Kampanellis in the post-war period respectively represent the two most important phases of that process, which, through various fluctuations and upheavals, shaped Modern Greek drama.
