This article comprises discussion on several issues of terminology in Modern Greek theatre, starting with the term “Cretan Renaissance” which is in a way misleading in a chronological and stylistic sense: in the 17th century Renaissance everywhere in Europe is over and manieristic and baroque elements are characteristic of the literary style. The second part is dealing with the problem of the Greek translation for Italian melodramma, (opera) and French and English mélodrame by the same word, μελόδραμα. This causes confusion and it seems better for mélodrame to use either original term or the expression “melodramatic work” or something similar. The third part is dedicated to the discussion of the term “θε'ατρο των ιδεών” for Modernism in drama. This is partly a genuine Greek term created by Xenop- oulos, which seems useful to indicate the major differences created in Greek drama by the adaptation of the -isms coming from the European literature. The last part is discussing the term “comédie” used in Greek drama of the 20th century for many and very different genres. It is proposed to use better the term “severe comedy”.
