The theatrical translations of Georgios Sakellarios (1767-1836) : Kodros (1786 inedited), Telemach and Calypso,Orpheus and Euridice (Vienna 1796)

This article analyses in detail the three outstanding theatrical translations of the medical doctor and poet Georgios Sakellarios from Kozani, who studied medicin in Vienna and was closely related to the scholar Yannis Zaviras in Budapest, author of the literary lexicon “Nea Hellas or Hellenikon Theatron”, written roundabout 1800 in Budapest. Most of the informations on these translations of dramas in French or German are found in this compedium. Three of the six translations are lost, among them the first translation of Shakpearean drama, “Romeo and Julia”. “Kodros” exists only in a manuscript, found in Kecskemet in Hungary, the other two librettos are edited in an anonymous edition Vienna 1796, from which only one unique exemplar exists in the whole world. With this study the name and work of an eminent poet and translator at the time of Rhigas and afterwards is restored. This article is the main part of an philological edition of the three outstanding translations, which will be published in the “Theatrical Library” of the Ouranis-Foundation in Athens.
