Abstract:
This text of neoclassicism, a tragedy by the Italian Peter Metastasios, was translated, together with other works of him, by I. Kantounis, a doctor and literateur. I. Kantounis lived before Solomos’ period and together with other writers paved the way for him, by creating a kind of poetical revival at Ionian islands. This translation presents not only a thematic but also a linguistic interest. It is observed that the evolution of the language at Ionian islands had a clear orientation towards the vernacular language (dimotiki) that is the preference for every day greek language, instead of the dominant italian language. The effort of those scholars for the enlightment can also be noticed through the translation of foreign literary texts. The text is accompanied by an introduction and a glossary.
