Abstract:
The main objective of this article is to explore Dorothy Heathcote’s professional commitment to the promotion of drama as a tool for stimulating holistic learning situations across the curriculum. Her biographical details, methodology, the extent of her influence and a comparison with contemporary practitioners are briefly presented in the introduction. Moreover, the article explains the role of the child and that of the teacher in Dorothy Heathcote’s methodology on teaching drama in education. Her personal use of concepts such as role, symbol, moral, metaphor, time, sign, teacher in role and mantle of the expert are also explored. In the end. the philosophical, epistemological and methodological issues relating to Dorothy Heathcote’s drama in education approach are discussed.
