Abstract:
After a brief outline of the critical reception of Roidis’ classical novel Pope Joan (1866), a comparison is drawn between the novel and its stage adaptation by Sotiris Hatzakis for the Municipal Regional Theatre of Patras (2008), with an attempt to examine the connections between textual and visual, writing and image, fiction and drama. The article focuses on choices of the stage adaptation like the omission of similes which constitute an emblematic element of the novel, the absence of the first-person narrator, the elimination of several episodes and characters, the construction of dialogues with a compilation of words and sentences from different parts of the book, the emphasis on the charismatic katharevousa of Roidis.
