Abstract:
This paper studies the shadow theatre performer Giannis Brachalis who, according to the oral tradition of the guild of Greek shadow theatre performers, is the man that brought shadow theatre from Turkey to Greece. In recent years some interesting evidence has come to light which clearly shows that shadow theatre existed in Greece long before Brachalis. Moreover, texts containing information on the mythical figure of Brachalis show his relationship with the underworld and allow us to make connections with oral tradition. All evidence shows that the transfer of the shadow theatre to Greece by Brachalis is a myth. The study attempts to determine the conditions and factors which influenced the creation of this myth.
