Abstract:
This article, on Andreas Staikos’ play titled 1843, is an attempt to determine its dramatic techniques as well as its ideological identity by focusing on the playwright’s use of the historical past. It is established that the sophisticated plexus of the different historical levels, on which the dramatic myth is based, actually carries the ideological meaning of the play and forms the basis of its dramatic techniques. At first, the plot components are divided into two categories: historical and fictional. Secondly, it is explained how the playwright, by combining these two different components, comments upon the way that societies narrate their past and perceive their relationship with it. The playwright by interposing the present upon the historical past on a micro-historical basis, proves that the ideological use of history is a determining factor in the formation of national and social conscience. In addition, the article comments on the playwrights’ device to play with time and history - a game that provides the play with its comic identity. At the same time this game creates the ideal background for the use of an idiosyncratic theatrical language as well as «the play -within- the- play» technique that strengthen the theatricality of the piece. Furthermore, the article establishes the reasons why the play is a totally non-traditional historical piece of theatre. Last, but not least, a hypothesis is given to a possible connection between the playwright’s perception of history and the postmodern historiography.
