Abstract:
This paper is an account of Demetrios Vernardakis’s last historical drama on one of the favorite Byzantine subjects, which offers Shakespeare-Ibsen like material to the playwright: the story of the imperial triangle of the emperor Nicephorus Phocas, the empress Theophano and his nephew and successor Ioannis Tzimiskis, who assassinated his uncle in conspiracy with Theophano, after becoming lovers. Vernardakis wrote the play on this subject, which was dramatized by eight other dramatists at least, in the beginning of the 20th century, hoping to see it staged by the newly founded Royal Theatre. This was realized, but the production was not successful. Through the press reviews of the time and later ones, the pros and cons of the drama are analyzed, resulting in general evaluation of the play, its timing and place in the author’s dramatic production and his general contribution to the Greek theatre.
