Relying on the view that economic growth does not depend only on technology and possession of raw materials, but also on human values, institutions and behaviors, the author investigates into the historical accomplishments of ancient Athens, concluding that its economic development was also due to the establishment of democracy and the humane values that permeated its institutional framework.
