An interpretation of Alexandros Papadiamantis’ tale The Murderess
Author:
Abstract:
Analyzing the tale The Murderess, written by Alexandras Papadiamantis in 1902, the author highlights the social and psychological aspects of the heroines ’ personality, who murders all her female great-children in order to liberate them from the deplorable condition of women in that time. The Murderess is a projection of Papadiamantis’ own disturbed psyche, divided between his excessive religious devotion and his idiosyncratic rebelliousness; at the same time, it is a cry for freedom and emancipation from the oppression that society exercised on women.
