French characters in Modern Greek literature
Author:
Abstract:
Examining the presence of French characters in the works of modern Greek literary writers, the authors pinpoint a major shift in the nature and the function of these characters from earlier to more recent Greek literature. Thus, the French hero was initially introduced as representing the medieval ideals of chivalry; then, in the frame of national liberating struggles, he became the advocate of freedom and human rights as promoted by the French Revolution; finally, the interests of literary authors shifted to French women, seen as embodiments of female emancipation and subtle eroticism.
