Odysseus Elytis and Music II : Poems by Odysseus Elytis set to music
Author:
Abstract:
Among contemporary Greek poets whose verses have been set to music, one of the most important is Odysseus Elytis. From 1964 to 1999, fifteen Greek composers (Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis, Angélique Ionatos, etc.) have written songs inspired by Elytis’ poetry, whose lyrical and melodic qualities are quite characteristic. The author presents us with a complete inventory of the works of the aforementioned composers, along with an addendum that lists, by title and by the first verse, all the songs whose lyrics are taken from Elytis’ poetic collections.
