Abstract:
Ioannis Kondylakis, who distinguished himself in the struggle for the liberation of Crete from Turkish rule, was also a talented journalist and writer. In his essays, chronicles and novels, Kondylakis expresses his devotion to his native village, Viannos, and his faith in pure, passionate love, regardless of differences in age or in social status. Moreover, he was characterized by his strong commitment for freedom and social equality. He was one of the toughest adversaries of monarchic authoritarianism, publicly denouncing King Otto ’s despotism; he also described with admirable dexterity the negative effects of poverty and social exclusion.
