Abstract:
Relying on his deep knowledge of Latin literature, the author undertakes a critical evaluation of three translations of Petronius’ famous novel Satyiicon into Modern Greek. First he offers to the reader the Latin text of chapter 45, and points out its most controversial elements which could (and in fact did) lead to misinterpretations. Then he quotes the three translations of the aforementioned chapter, respectively by A. Vagenas (1970), M. Meraklis (1970) and A. Alexandrou (1971; published in 1985). Finally, he assesses the fidelity of the three translators to the correct signification of Latin expressions. He explains that Meraklis’ errors are mainly due to the fact that he translates too freely, while the other two simply rely on English and French translations, and not on the original text, thus reproducing and amplifying ambiguities and faulty interpretations. Not willing to confine himself to negative criticism alone, the author propose s his own Modern Greek version of chapter 45, based on thorough historical, philological and linguistic analysis of the Latin text.
