The metaphysical categories of the One according to Plotinus : The Enneads, VI, 8 [39]
Author:
Abstract:
In the frame of a more comprehensive study of Plotinus’ position according to which the One is “beyond being”, the author explores the characteristics of the One considered in itself, as they are exposed in Enneads, VI, 8. Upon examination of the aforementioned passage, the author concludes that the philosopher’s thesis according to which the One is not a being does not imply that it is lesser than the other beings. On the contrary, the One of Plotinus is, due to its simplicity, superior to any other being, since all of them owe their partial “existence” to its absolute essence.
