Abstract:
Upon investigation in the records of the School for Destitute Children founded in 1872 by the Parnassos Literary Society, the author discovered the existence of nine pupils from the city of Laurion and the broader area of Laureotica. These adolescents, matriculated between 1890 and 1900 , were either orphans or from lower social strata of Laurion, which since 1864 had become an industrial center due to its mines, thus attracting workers from all over Greece. These figures show that it was rather rare for pupils to leave their city of residence in order to study in Athens; nevertheless, the School of Parnassos contributed to the education of the more disinherited among them.
