Abstract:
Our attitude towards Greco-Roman Antiquity is often characterized by two errors: either we project in our modern life what we perceive as classical ideals (purely “humanistic ” stance) or, inversely, we try to “colonize ” Antiquity, i.e. to project ideas and values of our time to ancient cultures (modernizing stance). The remedy proposed by the author is to recognize, in an historical perspective, the constitutive elements of Greco-Roman civilization for what they really are, and try to connect them to our present without altering their meaning. In the frame of this endeavor, it is important to understand not only what we owe to Greco-Roman Antiquity, but also what the latter owes to us, who are devoted to the preservation of its literary and archaeological monuments. For this fruitful interaction to continue functioning, it is important to revitalize teaching of classical civilization in schools. These reflections, delivered by Professor Rossi on the occasion of his admission to “Parnassos” as its honorary member, are followed by a presentation of his personality and his contribution to the study of Greco-Roman Antiquity, by Professor P. Nikolopoulos.
