Does Juvenal moralize in his fourth satire?
Author:
Abstract:
In order to determine the moralizing dimension of Juvenal’s fourth Satire, the author analyses its content from the standpoint of social, political and moral values it reflects. Set against the background of ancient Rome’s social stratification and the expression of the latter in terms of food, clothing, residence, profession, etc., the satire is read as a mirror of the social codes and political institutions of its time, with major emphasis on the process of social transformation: anxiety focused on the abandonment of older moral codes (.mosmaiorum) and anticipation of political renewal are intertwined, revealing the poet’s sensibility regarding these matters; thus the satire becomes a complex instrument of moral consciousness assessing the new social and institutional realities of Rome.
