Panhellenic and local contests in antiquity : awards and prizes
Author:
Abstract:
It is well known that in the official Panhellenic games celebrated in Ancient Greece, prizes were mainly honorific in character; nevertheless, in various local athletic and other contests, the winners were also awarded with money or objects of value. Based on the testimony of ancient texts and, above all, of inscriptions referring to victories, victors and prizes, the author explores that kind of awards in all its variety and complexity. On the other hand, the winners themselves used to dedicate to major Greek sanctuaries, especially to Delphi, cultic objects of value as a token of their gratitude towards the gods. Receiving and offering valuable items is thus highlighted as an important aspect of contest fighting and winning in the Hellenic world.
