Abstract:
The philosophical controversy about general concepts (the so-called “Universalia”), i.e. the endeavour to determine whether they exist independently of human thought (Realism) or they constitute merely a product thereof (Nominalism), has been a crucial one for the history of European thinking. The author analyzes the position of Orthodox theology in the matter and reaches the conclusion that it is not compatible with either of the two aforementioned philosophical schools. In fact, Orthodox dogma lies somewhere between the two, and is very akin to the theory of “Conceptualism” in the West and to the “moderate conceptual realism” defended by Byzantine thinkers.
