The three most important studies of the last decades about Rigas
Author:
Abstract:
The author presents three studies of his, referring to the work of Rigas Velestinlis and based on extensive research into the sources. The results of these studies are the following: 1) the model which inspired Rigas’ book Compilation of Physics (Vienna, 1790) is the French Encyclopedia by Diderot and D’Alambert. Rigas did translate, in a simple and fluid language, the superior scientific knowledge of the French authors; the high quality of his work is thus attested, despite the opinion of some scholars who in the past cast doubts about it; 2) the maps used by Rigas for his Chart of Greece (Vienna, 1799) have been identified. It is thus proved that Rigas did not visit in person the regions included in his work; instead he used other existing maps for the purpose of having a political map of the state he was dreaming of creating after the revolution he planned to foment; 3) the translator of the Olympians of Metastasio in Modern Greek was indeed Rigas himself, and not a friend of his, as it has been previously asserted.
