The fundamental contribution of Rigas Velestinlis’ literary creation “The School of Delicate Lovers” to the Greek readership is twofold: 1) through this collection of tales, Rigas introduces to the Greek public the new currents of Western European literature, and 2) by depicting the reality of French bourgeois society, he promotes the modernizing ideas of his time about enlightened civilization, equality of all humans, and rationalized social virtue. Loosely inspired by the collection of tales by Rétif de la Bretonne entitled “Contemporaines” (“Contemporary Tales”), Rigas is not a pale imitator of his French model; he rather adapts it to the everyday reality of the rising Greek bourgeois class, thus contributing to its cultural development and intellectual evolution in view of the upheavals that finally led to the outbreak of the Greek insurrection of 1821.
