Abstract:
Stephanos Koumanoudis (1818-1899) was one of the most important scholars of the 19th century. Professor of Latin Literature in the University of Athens and a distinguished member of Parnassos Literary Society, Koumanoudis greatly contributed to the promotion of Ancient Greek and Roman studies with his essays, translations and dictionaries. As it was customary for the scholars of his time, he also devoted himself to poetry. His poetic works include the long epic poem Stratis Kalopicheiros, the Sonnets of Venice and an indeterminate number of unpublished poems, some of them written in Ancient Greek or in Latin. Analyzing mainly Stratis Kalopicheiros, the author concludes that the poetry of Koumanoudis, despite its metrical perfection, is in fact dull, cold and incapable of generating feeling and passion, which accounts for the fact that modern anthologies do not include poems of his.
