The «EI» at Delphi

The article enumerates the various interpretations proposed by ancient (e.g. Plutarch) or modem thinkers (e.g. Karatheodoris) for the mysterious inscription “El” which used to ornate the temple of Apollon at Delphi. The author explores the historical circumstances as well as the philosophical and cosmological thinking of the ancient Greeks, rejects the views about Judaic or Phoenician origin of the Greek alphabet and proposes a monotheistic interpretation of the cryptic “El”, based on Pythagorean numerology and Platonic philosophy.
