A linguistic and factual approach of some figures of speech : commenting, from a modem perspective, on some passages from Aristotle ’s Rhetoric
Author:
Abstract:
The author analyzes a number of figures of speech, such as reflection, inversion and substantialization of adjectives, illustrating them with examples from Ancient and Modem Greek and from contemporary European languages. In this context, he argues in favor of the thesis that the aforementioned figures of speech, which have been explored and analyzed by modern linguistics, have in fact already been observed and described by Aristotle in the Rhetoric. Thus the Greek philosopher is shown to be the precursor of modern theories on language, and also of some specific distinctions, e.g. between implicitly and explicitly graded comparison, and so on.
