Abstract:
On April the 15th, 1819, the inhabitants of Parga, in the Epirus region, were forced to abandon their city, sold to the Turks by the British, and take the road of exile. The fate of the refugees had a profound impact on the philhellenic circles of Europe, and two eminent poets, the Italian Giovanni Berchet and the Greek Andreas Kalvos wrote verses inspired by that infelicitous incident. The author analyzes and compares the works of the two aforementioned poets, showing important similarities between them, which may be attributed either to the influence exerted by Berchet on Kalvos, or to their common desires and anxieties regarding the struggle of Greeks for liberation.
