Abstract:
General Georgios Bakos (1892-1945), commander of the Second Corps of the Hellenic Army during the war of 1940-41, was subsequently appointed Minister of National Defense in the governments of G. Tsolakoglou and K. Logothetopoulos (30/04/1941 - 7/04/1941). The work he accomplished in this context was remarkable. Evidence of this is shown in the documentspreserved in the Archives of the Triple Occupation (1941-44) kept by the Greek Direction of Military History. Bakos was particularly concerned in providing for both civilian and military personnel of his Ministry. The loans, the raise of the salaries, the common lunches, the conservation of both military archives and rare books, all these were part of the difficult and laborious job of Bakos. Information about Bakos’ activities as a Minister is revealed here for the first time and shows that he worked with honesty and zeal to the benefit of his colleagues and employees. Accused of treason by the communists, Bakos in reality accepted such a disgraceful responsibility in order to save lives which otherwise would have been lost because of the famine and the atrocities committed by German conquerors.
