History as a starting point for the creation of civilization

Exploring the issue whether History creates civilization, the author argues that History’s role is not to create, but to promote and ameliorate civilization. Knowledge of the past, study of tradition and promotion of humanist values are the means by which History contributes to self-awereness and spiritual maturiy: thus, combined with proper education, it creates the environment in which progress and technological advance are accompanied by philosophical thinking and moral virtue.
