Abstract:
The great Italian poet, novelist, stage director and art critic Pier Paolo Pasolini was often inspired by Greek mythology, but also by contemporary figures of Modern Greece who have acquired a “mythical ” status. His devotion to his mother is expressed in his film Edipo Re, whereas in Medea he portrays the opposition between civilized hypocrisy and “barbarous”spontaneity. As a poet, he dedicated three poems to the great opera performer Maria Callas, and another one to Alekos Panagulis, the Greek dissident who became the most famous opponent to the military junta of 1967-1974. Internal conflict, external oppression, tragic destiny and struggle for freedom are all strong themes of Pasolini’ s work and all of them are symbolized by mythical and contemporary heroes of Greece.
