The reformation program of Cleomenes III (235-222 BC) : a social-economic approach
Author:
Abstract:
The article describes the social and economic measures taken by the last and greatest king of Sparta, Cleomenes III, in order to redress the city which had considerably declined, both demographically and financially, during the Hellenistic period. The political changes promoted by Cleomenes consisted mainly in the suppression of the institution of the Ephoroi and the reduction of the Senate ’s power. However, the most important part of his reforms was his social and economic program: in fact, Cleomenes promoted the remission of the debts, the redistribution of land and the increase of the citizens’ number. The reforms of Cleomenes had a beneficial effect on Sparta even after the capture of the city by the Macedonians led by Antigonos Doson.
