Abstract:
During his visit in Messolonghi (1884), the writer Demetrios Vikelas met an old man, named Ioannis Kazis, who in his youth was the ferryman of Lord Byron. This encounter is described by Vikelas in his book From Nikopolis to Olympia and is validated by other documents. Subsequently, the article describes the circumstances of the edition, first in French and then in Greek, of Vikelas’ book; the latter was hailed by serious critics in French and Greek newspapers of the time as an important contribution to the amelioration of contemporary Greece’s image among European readers.
