The tyranny of hybris
Author:
Abstract:
Examining the etymological, philosophical and ethical connotations of the ancient Greek term hybris, the author establishes a parallel between the authoritarian rule of a tyrant and the moral deviation of a hybristes. Since hybris is the trespassing of the boundaries that delineate decent human behavior, tyranny is the manifestation of this aberration in the political domain. The tyrant is a hybristes, in the sense that he ignores the interest of the community in favor of his own selfish goals, thus offending both the gods and the laws that govern the cities. In those cases, as it is illustrated especially in Greek tragedy, the universal forces of harmony and justice intervene in such a way as to restore cosmic and political balance, provoking in the process the fall of the tyrant -hybristes.
