Physical concepts in Aristotle
Author:
Abstract:
Examining the writings of Aristotle, especially the Physika, the author defines, analyses and comments on some fundamental concepts of Aristotelian Physics, such as nature, principle, essence, matter, form, motion, force, energy, place, time, infinity, continuity and the void. These notions exerted great influence on western philosophical thought, and despite the fact that modern Physics is based on radically different principles, the Physics of Aristotle remains the first comprehensive system of describing and understanding natural laws, and as such is highly valuable for the history of both scientific progress and philosophical inquiry.
