Olympus and Virgil

Abstract:
The author examines the instances in which Virgil refers to the Mount Olympus, the mythical residence of ancient Greek gods. Virgil follows the traditional view of Olympus as a mountain reaching up to the skies, where dwell the Gods, thus being synonymous to the ether and the heaven of eternal jubilation and glory. So, in the prophecy of Anchises about the future achievements of Rome (Aen. 6. 781-2), we read that the glory of the Eternal City will reach as high as Olympus - a clear indication that the latter is, in Virgil, a metaphor for Roman universal domination.
