Abstract:
The period of Venetian domination in Crete (1211-1669) is perceived as an era of great cultural achievements, during which the island of Crete was the most advanced region of the Greek world in the domain of letters and fine arts. After the two first centuries of Venetian rule, which were characterized by mutual suspicion between the two communities, i.e. the Greek Orthodox and the Italian Catholic one, the following years, especially from the middle of the 15th century onwards, saw the flourishing of Cretan culture. This phenomenon was mainly due to the high quality of education in the island, where both public and private schools, as well as ecclesiastical foundations for both confessions, offered a wide range of knowledge; thus, the rates of literacy among Cretan population were astonishingly high. Moreover, many Cretans, both orthodox and catholic, studied in Italian Universities and contributed to the promotion of Greek letters in the West, even after the fall of Crete to the Turks.
