Abstract:
Nitsa Gazeli, the main character in the novel of Gr. Xenopoulos, The threefaced woman, is presented, prima facie, as the model of female rebellion against parental authority and social prejudice; yet, through the intricacies of the novel’s plot, her attitude is proved to be more ambiguous, as she finally dares not trespass the boundaries of bourgeois morality. She thus becomes an illustration of the contradictions of Greek society, always divided between social conservatism and openness to new ideas.
