The travel of Dionysos to Naxos : variants of a myth
Author:
Abstract:
According to the myth and the Homeric hymn “in Bacchum” (VII), while Dionysus was travelling to Naxos, the sailors of a Tyrrhenian ship attacked him and the god punished and transformed them into dolphins. Artists such as the vase-painter Exekias, the sculptor of Lysicrates’ monument in Athens and, perhaps, the painter of the “picture” described by Philostratus represented this adventure of the god, each one in his own way. The myth especially inspired poets (Ovid, Seneca, even A. Rizos Rangabes - in the 19th century) who represented the whole story or some details of it (Euripides, Propertius, Manilius - the latter referring to the constellation of the Dolphin). The myth was also well-known to the ancient mythographers (Ps.- Apollodorus, Hyginus the astronomer, Hyginus the mythographer).
