A Petros Brailas-Armenis’ unknown text about music
Author:
Abstract:
The text published and commented by the author is a speech that Petros Brailas-Armenis (1812-13/1884), a great philosopher and politician born in the island of Corfu, declaimed at an award presentation for new musicians that had excelled in a competition. This text was originally published in the local newspaper O Paratiritis (The Observer) on 16/28 September of 1861. The text commences by stressing the high importance of teaching music and its pedagogical contribution to the formation of a society which expresses “the sacred sentiment of beautiful” continuing and reinforcing “the ancient tradition of Greek art”. Then Bradas praises in his own unique way those musicians “who excelled” and extols the person of the President of music studies of the “Philharmonic Society of Corfu”, Nikolaos Ch. Mantzaros, connecting the latter’s instructive and compositional work with the artist’s struggle to realize and embody the ideal of his art, as well as placing Music in his philosophical system. As far as the search of the Brailian philosophical system is concerned, it is exceptionally interesting to comment on the condensation of his Aesthetics -or “Kalology”, as he prefers to name it- and its direct connection with the whole train of thought of his doctrine. In every line of his text is imprinted a part of his philosophical views and the searcher discovers with astonishment and admiration a miniature of the Brailian philosophical work, ascertaining, at the same time, Bradas’ special relation to music.
