Comparisons in Dante’s Inferno : influences of Virgil and translations by Kazantzakis
Author:
Abstract:
The author analyses, from a structural point of view, 68 instances of comparison in Dante’s Inferno. Based on logical, poetical and morphological criteria, he discerns recurring patterns in the mode of expression of the comparisons, arguing that their ultimate purpose is to render more plausible the marvelous and often incredible images created by Dante. These patterns are compared to similar formulas occurring in the poetry of Virgil, Dante’s supreme guide, while interesting remarks are formulated in connection to the expressions used by Nikos Kazantzakis in the frame of his translation of Dante’s work into Modern Greek.
